Rumpled and irritated, Devin Sloane sat behind his desk and glared at Nadine Harrington, whom Lemuel had just ushered into the office. Ms. Harrington had arrived last night and promptly disappeared to begin her investigation while Lemuel sat up with Devin, waiting like a best friend with a nervous expectant father. But though Sloane had called and threatened everyone from the governor to the local police chief, Lara Godfrey had not been located.

That fool Braun had let her slip through his fingers, and by all accounts the birth was imminent.

Devin’s own blundering had made matters worse. In a frenzy of fear, he and Braun had gone to Lara Godfrey’s house, hoping to catch her before she could flee. When they couldn’t find her at home, Braun’s frantic calls forced the police to investigate, and as long as the police were involved, Nadine’s men couldn’t go near Lara Godfrey’s town-home. The listening devices they had planted were illegal, and only Nadine’s high-tech expertise had prevented the cops from discovering the web of surveillance that had surrounded Lara Godfrey for months.

Nadine walked briskly across Devin’s office, her panty hose swishing through the silence, then dropped a hand-held tape recorder on his desk. “The cops finally left, so we were able to get this.” Her expression was serious, but one corner of her mouth curled with a secret. “Listen,” she said, pressing a button.

Devin froze as the tiny spokes of the recorder began to turn. He heard nothing but an electronic hiss, then a faint meow cut through the white noise.

“What’s that?” His gaze moved from the recorder to Nadine’s polished face. “So she has a cat—am I missing something significant here?”

“That’s no cat.” Nadine shut the tape off, then pressed the rewind button. “This tape is from the device we planted in Lara Godfrey’s bedroom, which abuts to the bedroom in the town house next door. Listen again.”

She pressed play, and again Devin heard a steady and prolonged hiss. Then the mewling sound began, and in a flash of understanding Devin realized what he had heard.

A baby’s cry.

“When?” he asked, shock flooding through him. “When—when was this recorded?”

Nadine smiled. “Last night, just after midnight. The sound is muffled because she ran to the librarian, as I knew she would. And he proved incredibly resourceful.”

Devin’s blood rose in a jet. Standing, he leaned on the desk and gave Lemuel a broad smile. “They’re still here! They are in that man’s house!” He shifted his gaze to Nadine. “You can get my child today.”

“We will retrieve your child, but we have to go through the proper channels.” With a boldness he didn’t expect, Nadine stepped forward and pressed her hand over his. “Patience, Devin. Lara Godfrey is not going anywhere. I’ve had people stationed outside the house all night, and I’ll keep them there all weekend. If you’ll give me a copy of the surrogacy agreement, I’ll hand-deliver it to the judge Monday morning. Your lawyer can arrange an immediate hearing, and if all goes well, you’ll have custody of your baby Tuesday or Wednesday.
